Running Deer's name was Rhonda before she married Moon Bird and moved to the forest. She grew up in a big city where she lived in an apartment with her parents. The buildings on the street where she lived were so tall the sunlight never reached the pavement. There was a big park in the city but, her parents were fearful of all the strangers passing through there and never allowed her to go to the park. So, Rhonda was totally out of touch with the natural world. The characters who came into her life after she moved to the forest had much to teach her. She was an eager student, learning quickly and was soon given her new name, Running Deer.
Moon Bird's name used to be Marco. He lives deep in the forest in a small cabin with his wife, Running Deer. When Moon Bird was a child he lived in the city where he knew very little about nature. Since then he has found many teachers who have shown him the way of living in the natural world. He has become very good in many nature skills and continues to learn every day. Moon Bird has been known to run when he should walk slowly, and has been seen, on occasion, talking to trees. Overall, though, he is a very likeable fellow. He was given the name Moon Bird because he sometimes acts like a certain kind of bird that flies at night.
