NATURE AWARENESS
TRACKING

Nature awareness tracking is a big topic. Many books have been written about it. In this activity, we will get you started. If you complete the activity and want more involvement in tracking, contact us by using the nav bar on the left of the screen. We will refer you to another program if possible.

What is a tracker?
A tracker is a person who follows tracks. These tracks can be left by animals, people, birds, insects, or anything else that moves.

Who would ever want to do such a thing?
Before modern times, trackers were the people who brought food to the village. They were highly skilled hunters who knew how to find game animals by following their tracks. They could look at a track and tell what animal made it, how long ago, which way it was heading, and where it was now--and much, much more.

Why should this interest me?
We won't try to tell you that you "should" be interested in tracking. We will say though, that a tracker is a highly skilled naturalist. There is much we have talked about in this web site and in our books about developing young people as naturalists. The tracker is it.

If you want to track, and do it well, then you must know about the animals, plants, trees, birds, sun, moon, weather, and everything else about nature. The better tracker you are, the better naturalist you will be. The better naturalist you are, the better tracker you will be.

How can I get started as a tracker?
Getting started is easy. Get down on your hands and knees and look at tracks. We have a web page about this. Go there now for your first tracking lesson. It is called NATURE ACTIVITY TRACKING To come back here, click BACK TO NATURE AWARENESS TRACKING on the bottom of the page.
