KAMANA FOR KIDS
Curious name isn't it? Kamana. How did we come up with such a name for our nature books? The word kamana comes from the Akamba Tribe of Kenya. It translates to "the bearer for the warrior." The "warrior" refers to the society of people who defended the traditions of the tribe and took care of the people.
In our own times, we need "warriors" who will learn and pass on the knowledge of the natural world. Thus our own people will be taken care of as we learn to live in balance and harmony with nature. Some years ago, noted naturalist Jon Young, assisted by the staff of the Wilderness Awareness School, developed an adult program that addresses this issue. It is called the Kamana Naturalist Training Program and is now one of the core programs of the school.
With the help of Wilderness Awareness School, we have developed a similar program for children. Rather than use extensive study and research like the adult program, Kamana For Kids is a series of fun and engaging nature books made up of stories that children love to read and get involved in. The learning emerges without effort.
Each chapter in Book One: Awareness is a unique story about one of the essential aspects of nature awareness--Secret Spot, Owl Eyes, Deer Ears, Raccoon Touch, and Dog Nose.
Book Two: Hazards raises awareness in a fun and sometimes mysterious way, of some of the natural hazards. These include getting lost, lightning strikes, wild animal encounters, insects, plants, and much more.
Is Kamana for my child?
We believe that every child yearns to be involved in nature. Kamana for Kids is designed to meet each child at whatever level he or she is at, in a gentle and safe way. We offer personal mentoring in most of our nature books. Your child can learn to become comfortable and safe in the natural world through the Kamana For Kids series.
Our books can be read in any order. No need to start with Book One if another selection seems more interesting to you.
