RED FOX

Red Fox

Journal by Running Deer

The Red Fox is about the size of a small dog. In fact, it is in the Canidae (dog) family. It's coat is reddish with a yellow tint. The tail is bushy with a white tip. No other member of the dog family has this white tip. It's legs and feet are black.

This species is widespread, found over most of North America. Look for it in woods, on edges, and in fields, hunting for it's favorite food. This includes many small mammals such as mice, voles, rabbits. It will also eat insects and some fruits.

While it is most active at night, it can also be seen in the daytime. I remember seeing one curled up in the sun next to a cabin in the woods. I didn't get too close, but I could see it's red coat was beautiful.

The enemies of this dog-like creature are other mammals that are larger, such as a cougar or a wolf. I don't know if a coyote would attack a red fox, but they pose another kind of danger. Coyotes run in the same areas and eat the same food. A pack of coyotes could force a fox out of it's home range. I wonder where it would go then?
