THE ADVENTURES OF PELICAN PETE PREENING FOR FLIGHT

Pelican Pete

Age Level 4 to 8
Review by Bob

The Adventures of Pelican Pete is a series written in delightful rhyme. Preening For Flight tells the story of Pelican Pete from birth to first flight. I loved how every page taught the reader something about pelicans or about the environment. As I read, I became so involved in the beautiful words and drawings that at first I didn't realize that I was learning something. The learning takes place without effort in this book. In fact, it is fun.

SO WHAT, SAW-WHET?

SAW WHET
Age level 4-8
Review by Bob

So What, Saw Whet is a delightful book that brings the reader very close to a very small owl. We are drawn into the life of this owl as we follow an imaginary conversation. With gentle humor and an engaging rhyming dialogue, the author guides us to fun and interesting learning. This is an excellent read-aloud book for children of all ages.

There are more than 12 beautiful wildlife photos of the saw whet owl in the book. Not only do they capture the details of the physical side of the saw-whet, but I was amazed to see the personality of this creature emerge with each shot. We found it at Amazon.com.

A DROP AROUND
THE WORLD

BY BARBARA SHAW McKINNEY

Age Level 5 to 12
Review by Barbara

This is a clever, imaginative, and poetic saga. It portrays the travels of a drop of H20 as it moves around the world, changing form from solid ice to liquid to vapors.

The drop passes through bodies of plants, animals and people on its journey. The art illustrations are brilliant. I am impressed with the author's ability to tell an entire story in rhyme.

As if that is not enough, the last few pages of the book give tidbits of interesting information about water. The book is recommended for ages 5-12. However, I believe that most adults would also learn something new from reading it.

THE FIRST STRAWBERRIES

A CHEROKEE STORY

Retold By Joseph Bruchac

Age Level 4 to 8
Review by Barbara

This story would appeal to younger children because the storyline is short enough to hold their attention, with large, brightly colored pictures on every page. The conclusion gives a wonderful moral for the child to consider every time he/she eats a sweet strawberry.

Review by Bob

This is a wonderful book filled with games and activities for children of all ages. Cornell is an expert in combining fun with nature awareness. This book is full of new and interesting activities that children love. Most are noncompetative. Adult supervision is needed for most of these activities.
