JULIE OF THE WOLVES

By Jean Craighead George

Age Level 8 to 12
Reviewed by Barbara

Julie of the Wolves This book tells about a young Eskimo girl caught up between her love and values for the old Eskimo way and the transition to the ways of modernization. She ends up on a lonely journey across the Tundra where she is adopted by a wolf pack.

The story shows the wisdom of "patience with the ways of nature". I especially like the part where the Eskimos celebrate the appearance of the sun. The story is well told and gives a valuable teaching on the importance of living the simple lfe and maintaining cultural values.

It is the winner of the 1973 Newbery Medal. I plan to give it to my grandaughter to read, so obviously, I would recommend it.

I'M IN CHARGE OF CELEBRATIONS

By Byrd Baylor

Age Level 4 to 8

I'm In Charge of Celebrations This is a very uplifting story about a girl who celebrates just about everything in life. It is the kind of story that will inspire you to a new perspective on everything around you that you may have been taking for granted.

The girl in the story sets a good example of the joy that can come to one who lives and walks in awareness. The colorful art illustrations are beautifully unique.

GRANDAD'S PRAYERS OF THE EARTH

By Douglas Wood

Age Level 6 to 9
Reviewed by Barbara

grandad's prayers of the earth The art illustrations by P.J. Lynch captured my attention and prompted me to buy this book. The large, full color pictures are absolutely magnificent! Being an artist myself, I am not easily impressed, but the illustrations in this book are stunningly beautiful.

When I read the book, I realized that the story was every bit as majestic as the pictures. A man mentors his grandson about prayer as they walk together in the forest. He teaches the boy how to listen to the prayers of nature. If you think you do not know how to pray, or even if you think you do, this story has a teaching for you.

This book should not only be read but, taken into your heart and lived. I highly recommend it. I kid you not, it brought tears to my eyes.
